Participate in Clinical Research

Participate

  • If you have been diagnosed with dementia, you play a vital role in our research. To participate, you will:

    1. Have a working diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia, primary progressive aphasia, Parkinson’s plus syndrome, Alzheimer’s disease, or posterior cortical atrophy

    2. Be fluent in English

    3. Live at home

    4. Be able to communicate and manage basic self-care

    5. Be able to walk unaided

    6. Have no other major neurological or psychological disorders, such as stroke, severe brain injury, schizophrenia or bipolar disorder.

We will need a close family member or friend to accompany you to the clinic so that we can gather information from multiple perspectives.

If you or someone you care for meets these criteria and would like to participate, ask your specialist (e.g., neurologist, geriatrician, psychiatrist) to send a referral to frontier@sydney.edu.au.

If you are traveling from outside of Sydney, FRONTIER will reimburse travel costs up to $500 (e.g., petrol, flights, accommodation). Keep your receipts for reimbursement. If you need accommodation, we can provide recommendations within walking distance of the clinic.

  • We are always in need of healthy volunteers to support our research. Volunteer participation typically involves the activities outlined above. To volunteer, email frontier@sydney.edu.au.

  • Research participation typically involves a 1-2 day visit to the FRONTIER clinic, where you will:

    • Meet with a specialist neurologist

    • Complete questionnaires about your medical and family history

    • Complete tests of memory, language, and other thinking skills

    • Have an MRI scan of your brain—a painless, non-invasive procedure that provides high quality images of your brain

    • (Optional) Provide blood sample for our biomarker research project
